The University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir

The University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir

The University is unique in the sense that it is a multi-campus and multi-discipline university. It consists of the Main Campus, based at Muzaffarabad, and four faculties at other three campuses. The Main Campus is a spectral combination of Basic Sciences and Humanities. The science group includes Department of Botany, Chemistry, Computer Sciences and Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology, and the Institute of Geology while Kashmir Institute of Economics and Departments of English, Law and Art and Design make up the Humanities group. Also located at Muzaffarabad is Kashmir Information Resource Center.

The constituent faculties are located at District Headquarters. These Faculties, in contrast to the Main Campus, specialize in particular fields of studies. For instance, the Faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot offers degrees in Agriculture; the Faculty of Administrative Sciences Kotli offers specialization in the discipline of Administrative Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Mirpur is dedicated to Engineering and Technology and consists of their respective specializations like Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering. The Department of Computer Sciences and Information Technology at Mirpur offers Bachelor, Master, and MS in Information Technology and Software Engineering. Mirpur is also home to Faculty of Home Economics and Institute of Islamic Studies & Education.

A massive earthquake measuring 7.6 at Richter scale hit the Muzaffarabad & Rawalakot Campuses on October 08, 2005 destroying most of the buildings and severely damaging the others. As a result, the Faculties of Sciences, Arts & Agriculture were relocated at Islamabad where classes are being held at Bahria University, UAAR, AIOU and Federal Directorate of Education.

The reconstruction of the University is a top priority. The AJ&K Govt. and ERRA are acquiring the land at new at a new site (Chatter Klas) for campuses. Saudi Govt. has shown keen interest in rebuilding the University. At the moment, design for new structures is being prepared.

Meanwhile a Turkish NGO (Kocaeli Municipality) has constructed temporary Earthquake-proof structures at city campus site Muzaffarabad.

Temporary structures for Science faculty & students’ accommodation are being built at New Campus Muzaffarabad & Rawalakot.
